As a result of this initiative 13 awards have been available for take up in January 2003. Candidates nominated from Ghana, Kenya, Sierra Leone and the United Kingdom are being considered for these awards. It is not yet known whether awards will be available in 2004.&lt;br /&gt;The terms of awards in Nigeria can be found in the 2002 Prospectus, which the Ministry confirmed in September 2002 is still applicable. Closing dates may vary according to the needs of host countries, but the deadline for 2003 entry to the United Kingdom is expected to be at the end of September 2002. This is a prestigious scholarship scheme providing fully funded scholarships for Master’s Degree programmes to talented graduates and young professionals from Nigeria.  Chevening has produced over 800 scholars since 1984. This makes the country the highest beneficiary in sub-Saharan Africa.  The return rate of scholars to Nigeria is almost 100%, with many ex-scholars going ahead to hold important posts in different sectors in Nigeria, thereby helping to develop the Nigerian nation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;INVITATION FOR APPLICATIONS&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Applications are now invited from suitably qualified candidates for the 2006/2007 British Chevening scholarship awards.  These awards are for up to 12 months’ postgraduate study at a UK higher education institution for the academic year commencing in September 2006.  The aim of the scheme, which is funded by the British government, is to contribute to the political, economic and social development of Nigeria.  It is designed to benefit the country’s future leaders, thinkers and opinion formers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Applications will only be considered from younger professionals who:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;have an upper-second or first-class degree.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;are aged between 25-40 [men] and 25-45 [women].&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;can demonstrate outstanding achievement in their field.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;can demonstrate the potential to make positive impact on the future of Nigeria.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The following themes and subject areas are of special interest:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Governance (including strengthening democracy, electoral reform, judicial/police reform, journalism, economic governance and public sector reform).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Energy (including security/governance of oil and gas industry, renewable energy).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sustainable development (including non-oil sector economic development, privatisation, MDGs/poverty reduction,&lt;br /&gt;education and environmental management).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Business administration/Economics.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Islamic studies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The above list serves as a guide.
